As a young woman living with Gaucher’s, I want to be seen as beautiful and unique, and not as someone suffering from disease. This work combines science and art in an aim to remove the stigma associated with disease. In terms of the subject matter, it shows, at the microscopic level, the Gaucher cell. Conceptually, however, as a symbol of imperfection, the cell speaks of beauty, of individuality and also of life. The artwork asks viewers to not only reflect on and challenge traditional notions of beauty, but to also embrace our differences and our imperfections.
